Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS) is a chronic pain condition characterized by severe burning pain, swelling, and changes in skin color and temperature. At Keith Schmidt, MD in Hoffman Estates, IL, we offer a multimodal approach to CRPS treatment using the latest interventional techniques to manage this challenging condition.
What Is CRPS?
CRPS typically develops after an injury, surgery, stroke, or heart attack, and involves pain that is disproportionate to the initial event. It most commonly affects an arm or leg and can cause burning or throbbing pain, sensitivity to touch or cold, swelling, changes in skin color and temperature, joint stiffness, and muscle weakness. Without early and aggressive treatment, CRPS can become increasingly debilitating.
Our CRPS Treatment Approach
Dr. Schmidt uses a comprehensive, multimodal approach to CRPS that may include sympathetic nerve blocks (stellate ganglion or lumbar sympathetic blocks), spinal cord stimulation, DRG stimulation, ketamine infusions, physical therapy coordination, and medication management. Early intervention is critical—the sooner treatment begins, the better the outcomes. We work closely with each patient to develop an individualized treatment plan.
