The 5 Numbers I Check on Myself Every Year
Every year, millions get a standard physical — and their doctor tells them everything looks “normal.” But “normal” doesn’t mean optimal for longevity.
1. ApoB (Apolipoprotein B)
ApoB counts the actual number of atherogenic particles in your blood. Far better than LDL alone. Optimal: below 60 mg/dL.
2. Fasting Insulin
Your fasting glucose can look “normal” for 10-15 years while insulin climbs. Fasting insulin catches the problem a decade earlier. Target: below 6 uIU/mL.
3. hs-CRP
Measures systemic inflammation — the silent driver behind cardiovascular disease, cancer, and accelerated aging. Target: below 1.0 mg/L.
4. VO2 Max
The single strongest predictor of all-cause mortality. Highly trainable at any age with Zone 2 and HIIT.
5. DEXA Scan
Shows exactly how much muscle, fat, and bone you have. A bathroom scale will never detect sarcopenia or osteopenia.
