Why Your Pain Doctor Cares About Longevity

I’m a pain doctor who plans to live to 120. That might sound extreme, but it shapes everything about how I practice medicine — and how I take care of my own body.

Here’s what most people don’t realize: chronic pain doesn’t just hurt. It actively ages your body faster. The research is clear on this. Persistent pain elevates cortisol levels, disrupts sleep architecture, triggers systemic inflammation, and — perhaps most critically — stops you from moving.

The Pain-Aging Connection

When you’re in pain, your body enters a stress state. Cortisol stays elevated. Sleep quality drops. You stop exercising because it hurts. And when you stop moving, everything accelerates — muscle loss, bone density decline, cardiovascular deconditioning, metabolic dysfunction.

This is why I don’t think of myself as just a pain doctor. I think of myself as a longevity doctor who specializes in removing the #1 barrier to movement: pain.

Movement Is the #1 Longevity Drug

The data on this is overwhelming. VO2 max — a measure of cardiovascular fitness — is the single strongest predictor of all-cause mortality. Stronger than blood pressure, cholesterol, or smoking status. And you can’t improve your VO2 max if you’re sidelined by pain.

That’s why my goal for every patient isn’t just “less pain.” It’s “more movement.” I want you hiking at 70, playing with your grandkids at 80, and still independent at 90.
