Vertebroplasty is a minimally invasive procedure that stabilizes vertebral compression fractures by injecting medical-grade bone cement into the fractured vertebra. At Keith Schmidt, MD in Hoffman Estates, IL, we offer both vertebroplasty and kyphoplasty to help patients with painful spinal fractures regain mobility and comfort.

When Vertebroplasty Is Recommended

Vertebral compression fractures are common in patients with osteoporosis and can cause severe back pain, limited mobility, and progressive spinal deformity. Vertebroplasty is recommended when conservative treatments like rest, bracing, and pain medications haven’t provided adequate relief, typically after 2-4 weeks of failed conservative management.

The Procedure

Using fluoroscopic guidance, Dr. Schmidt inserts a needle through the skin into the fractured vertebra and injects bone cement that hardens within minutes, stabilizing the fracture and eliminating the micro-motion that causes pain. The procedure takes about 30-60 minutes per level treated and is performed under conscious sedation. Most patients experience significant pain relief within 24-48 hours.
