Stellate ganglion blocks are a specialized intervention for complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS), sympathetically maintained pain, and upper extremity pain conditions. At Keith Schmidt, MD in Hoffman Estates, IL, we use this advanced technique to treat challenging pain conditions that haven’t responded to conventional treatments.
Understanding the Stellate Ganglion
The stellate ganglion is a collection of sympathetic nerves located in the neck that controls blood flow and pain sensation in the face, neck, arms, and upper chest. When the sympathetic nervous system becomes overactive—often after injury or surgery—it can cause burning pain, swelling, and changes in skin color and temperature known as CRPS.
How the Procedure Works
Using ultrasound or fluoroscopic guidance, Dr. Schmidt carefully injects local anesthetic near the stellate ganglion to block sympathetic nerve activity. This can provide significant pain relief, improve blood flow, and help break the pain cycle associated with CRPS and other sympathetic pain disorders. The procedure is performed as an outpatient in our Hoffman Estates facility.
